How it Started
The first year we were sent to the Dominican Republic. That’s where I fell in love with missions trips. I truly believe the greatest gift you can give someone if the gift of sight.
I continued to do missions every year and in my last year I was elected president of VOSH. After I graduated, I had the opportunity to go to Mexico, Africa, and Guatemala.
When I became pregnant with my first son, I had to put missions on hold. That’s when we started donating to Optometry Giving Sight. We also started our World Sight Day Challenge where we donated all our proceeds to missions all over the world. While my boys were babies we did this every year being one of the top 10 donators in the US.
How We Evolved Our Mission
One thing we strived for was, instead of giving used glasses to those who’s prescription was “close,” we began to look at missions differently. We asked ourselves, “what would it look like if we did a full exam, just like they would get in the states, then let them pick out glasses and came home and made them in our lab?”
We knew it would be tricky to get them back. But we had good contacts and means to guarantee that the patients would receive their glasses.
Over the past couple of years we’ve provided tons of glasses, treated eye infections and eye diseases. God has blessed us with the ability to serve and provide sight to people all over the world.
We also donate locally to the ABC Room and Children’s Advocacy in Canton, TX. We have been able to help numerous children and adults in Van Zandt county as well. I truly feel like God has blessed me with a profession that I love and in that, it is my job to be the hands and feet of God. I serve him everyday, but truly I am blessed to serve him in areas that have a real and desperate need all over the world.
